Beyond the Dawn

 Silly for No Reason

For no reason at all I find that I am in a rather silly mood tonight. So I would like to share a poem that I wrote while staring into space and thinking about absolutely nothing... I call it

Jack and Jill Revisited

Jill and Jack went up the tracks

to fetch a jug of moonshine

He fell in a crack

and wrenched his back

so Jill just left him lying...

on the track...

with broken back...

Poor Jack.

THE THINGS WE SAY WITH SILENCE

Words with no forethought can land like a blow
and bruise with the force of a stone.
They can fracture a heart or batter a soul
and cut a man straight to the bone.

We must never allow our remarks to be sharp
but strive to keep them tender and sweet,
lest tomorrow we find ourselves sorry,
when we learn that our words we must eat.

We must be careful with words that we speak,
reveal only what should be repeated,
and develop the grace to say nothing at all,
when our opinion is really not needed.

A morsel of gossip from a thoughtless tongue
could cause someone's future to shatter;
tho a moment of silence would have been worth
more than an hour of idle chatter.

Insurance or Insanity...American Dream or Nightmare

We work hard all our lives and suddenly at or around middle age we step back and survey our assets and liabilities. What do we find?

Some of us find that we have spent far more money and time in preparing for...and covering, the unexpected, than we have spent on actual reality.

Most of us have had health insurance since we were children. This was to insure our parents that, should we become ill or die, they would be able to afford our medical expenses or funeral expenses, or heaven forbid, both of these.

Most of us became liscensed drivers at age sixteen or so. We then needed auto insurance coverage. This was to insure that if we drove the family car through our neighbor's swimming pool, our parents would not end up penniless, due to replacement of said swimming pool, car, and the whiplash the neighbors could suffer, when running outside to see what the crash was all about. (yes, this could happen, whiplash...tongue lash, eye lash, back lash...you can be sued for all kinds of 'lashes'...)

Then came the time when we went to work for ourselves. We needed the insurance provided by our employer. Usually a group insurance plan where the weekly premiums ate up a large percent of our paychecks each year. We also opted for the short term disability coverage, in the event that we became disabled and could not work. This would assure us that our paychecks would continue until we could return to our J.O.B.S.

Ahhh, then we met our significant other and decided to get married, purchace a nice house and three cars and have the traditonal 2.5 children, and begin living the American Dream. It was now OUR turn to plan for the possible accidents, illnesses and losses for our own family. And the cycle continued...

Now in our middle age, we wonder if the American Dream is really that...or is it the American Nightmare. A catastrophic nightmare of worring about what 'might' happen. A nightmare of suspicion, dread, preparing for the worst, expecting misfortune...

Is it any wonder that eighty-seven percent of today's working people are suffering from depression and other anxiety related illnesses? I'm just thankful that my current health plan includes prescription drug coverage... otherwise, I couldn't afford the cost of my Prozac!

To All My Friends At The Stream

The past few days have been so hectic that I haven't had time to read and visit everyone here at blogstream the way I would have liked to do.

I would like to take this time to thank all those who have dropped by to say "hi"  and leave a comment on my blog. I love all you guys and gals and I never thought I would find a place like blogstream where everyone is so caring and friendly. I am so happy I did. I have other blogs, but this is more than that.

This is more like a family fun park. It sort of reminds me of camping and how we would all gather around someone's campfire at night and really talk. I have met some truly beautiful people that way, and I was always sad when vacation ended and we all went our separate ways.

Of course we promised to keep in touch, but somehow, when you get back to life and all its problems, you tend to forget about promises like that. It makes me sad to think about it now.

However, in my heart I have never forgotten those people, because each one had an impact on my life in one way or another. I have tons of pictures and an address book full of contacts...maybe now would be a good time to reconnect with some of them. Is there a statute of limitations on the "Let's keep in touch" promise or is it valid forever?

How long is too long? It's been 15 years or more...

Anyway, enough of my ramblings. Think I will try and go to bed before 3am for the first time this week. I am care giver for my elderly mother and I have to be at her house by nine o'clock each morning...whether I sleep or not.  Have a good night my friends, and pleasant dreams.
